TEXT: Micro Econ, by William A McEachern.  ISBN:  9780324587388.

COURSE OBJECTIVE: To teach the student basic microeconomic concepts emphasizing both theoretical and practical applications of the subject.

Each semester's classes vary and we tend to move through information slightly differently than a previous semester, it is for that reason that I do not assign specific dates to the subjects.  The "weeks" are approximations.  When exams approach, we will discuss an exam date in class that serves the majority at the time.  Exam dates will allow plenty of time between completing the material that will be tested and the exam itself.

There are NO makeup exams.

  • Week 1 - Chapter 1, Economics and Economic Reasoning.  Chapter 2, Trade, Trade-offs and Government Policy.  Chapter 3, The Evolving U.S. Economy in Perspective.
  • Week 2 - Chapter 4, Supply & Demand.  Chapter 5, Using Supply & Demand.
  • Week 3 - EXAM 1 on Chapters 1,2,3,4,5. Chapter 6, Elasticities.   Chapter 7, Taxation and Government Intervention; Chapter 8, Logic of Individual Choice.
  • Week 4 - Chapter 9, Production & Cost Analysis I.  Chapter 10, Production & Cost Analysis II. EXAM 2 on Chapters 6,7,8,9, 10.
  • Week 5 - Chapter 11, Perfect Competition.  Chapter 12, Monopoly.  Chapter 13, Monopolistic Competition, Oligopoly, and Strategic Pricing.
  • Week 6 - Chapter 14,  Real World Competition & Technology.  Chapter 15, Antitrust Policy and Regulation.  Chapter 16, Work & the Labor Market.  EXAM 3 on chapters: 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16.
  • Week 7 - Chapter 17, The Distribution of Income.  Chapter 18, Government Policy and Market Failures.
  • Week 8 - Chapter 19, Policies & Economics:  The Case of Agricultural Markets.  Chapter 20, Microeconomic Policy, Economic Reasoning, and Beyond. EXAM 4 on Chapters 17, 18, 19. 20.
  • FINAL EXAM for the M-F Morning Section:  8-10am., Monday, July 27th.  DO NOT MISS THE FINAL, THERE ARE NO MAKEUP EXAMS.

  • FINAL EXAM for the M-W Evening Section:  7-9pm., Monday, July 27th.  DO NOT MISS THE FINAL, THERE ARE NO MAKEUP EXAMS.

  • MISSED CLASS: Make arrangements with a classmate to get the notes on the class that you missed. You don’t have to notify me if you are unable to attend class.
  • EXAMS: Exams are listed on this syllabus and will cover chapters indicated. Exams contain multiple choice questions. The final exam is selectively comprehensive. There is a separate page on this site for each exam including the final exam; it details the chapters that will be included on each exam and the chapters that will be covered on the final exam.
  • I post the grades for each of the exams on these same web pages the day after that the exam is given.
  • You are required to bring a BLUE or GREEN SCANTRON form (available at the bookstore) to record your answers on each exam.

    On the SCANTRON form:

    1. Print your name in the spaces provided and "bubble-in" the corresponding letters on the form.

    2. Print and Bubble-in a number in the "Special Code" area of the form. It is illegal to post grades by social security number or by name, your grade will be posted by special code so that you and only you know your score. Your special code is what ever you want it to be. Make one up. You will lose 5 points on the exam if your special code is NOT properly filled out!

  • The final is comprehensive, you may "drop" your lowest exam grade. You may not drop the final. You may not be exempt from the final. You may not "make-up" a missed exam, use the missed exam as the "drop."

  • GRADING:
    90 – 100% = A
    80 – 89 = B
    70 – 79 = C
    60 – 69 = D

    I do NOT curve scores.
